THE UTILITARIAN TREND

Boxy cuts, structured lines and chunky silhouettes - the utilitarian vibe is one that demands attention..

We’ve seen it all from trench coats to cargo pants to boiler suits to a whole lot of khaki. The utilitarian trend has been taking over the runway and high street, and these silhouettes don’t seem to be going out of style anytime soon! With zips, buckles, lace-ups, drawstrings and oversized pockets, designers have added a sophisticated edge on what previously bordered on the side of grunge.

A favourite member of the utilitarian family is the chunky boot where fashion meets functionality. Apart from being a stylish standout in any outfit, chunky soled boots are comfortable and practical with their durable appeal. These Alexander McQueen beauties will toughen up any outfit with their lace-up look and silver buckles that can be worn with anything from skirts to tailored trousers, making them a versatile wardrobe staple.

Despite being influenced by menswear, utility boots also work well when paired with more feminine silhouettes like this Country Road dress, creating character and contrast between the strong and delicate.

Boxy cuts, structured lines and chunky silhouettes, the utilitarian vibe is one that demands attention. Inspired by its military roots, this trend is fused with a ‘ready to tackle anything’ attitude that boasts confidence and strength with every stride. As always fashion extends beyond fabric, transcending the surface level to rather express something of greater significance. Perhaps we can take the strong-willed nature of this trend and apply it to our current times. We might not be able to go out in trench coats and utility boots but at least we can all work together to combat this (no pun intended)!
