The real beauty in the French approach to, well, beauty, lies within its simplicity. Simple but effective, French men and women favour products that do their job and do it well. In France, there is nary a heavily cream contoured cheek nor eyelash extension in sight- while there’s still an art to that, in its place you’ll find fresh complexions, low-fi eye makeup and nonchalantly stained lips.

FRENCH BEAUTY ESSENTIALS
French pharmacy skincare has developed something of a cult following for both its low price point and, more importantly, its efficacy. French beauty is all about beautiful, fresh complexions, with great skincare the cornerstone of any good routine. Brands like La Roche Posay, Nuxe, Caudalie and Avene are now readily available in Australia, meaning we too have unbridled access to fuss-free, effective French skincare.

A LIGHT HAND.
To master the French base, the secret lies in the application process rather than the products themselves. Should you choose to only use concealer or use a full coverage foundation, the key is to apply using a light hand. Choose a base product that perfectly matches your natural skin tone- your base needs to be completely undetectable from your complexion. Apply the product only where you feel it’s necessary and leave the rest of the skin bare, rather than covering your entire face in colour. Blend the product using your fingertips, allowing the warmth of your body to melt the product as it sinks into the skin. The result? Your skin, but better.

EASY ON THE EYES.
A chic, smokey eye is surprisingly easy to achieve when you approach it with a French mentality. Rather than applying layers of meticulously placed powder eyeshadows, use an eyeshadow crayon to cut your getting-ready time by two thirds. Simply scribble the shadow over the mobile lid and then smudge with your fingers. Finish with lashings of jet black mascara.

LIP TO CHIC.
Another chic timesaver, a sheer tint can be applied to both the cheeks and lips for a pop of healthy colour. Blend a rosey red liquid into the apples of the cheeks to give the skin a “caught in the snow” flush, then use your finger to press the colour into your lips for a just-bitten tint.
